Testimonials
SianThomas, Second
Year Trainee
I successfully applied for the Hugh James Summer Placement
scheme in the penultimate year of my degree. It provided me
with an invaluable insight into what it would be like to be a part
of the Firm. I was impressed by the friendly atmosphere in the
Firm. Everyone was very welcoming.
I shadowed current trainees in their various departments.
I was glad of the opportunity to hear first hand from the trainees
themselves their experiences at Hugh James. I was encouraged
by the fact that they only gave positive feedback! One of the
most notable aspects of the scheme was that I was given practical
tasks to complete which made the experience both interesting and
informative. I wasn’t made to feel like a spare part which was
often the case when I went on other work experience placements!
I enjoyed this introduction to the Firm and was delighted when I
was offered a training contract. I would definitely recommend
the summer placement scheme to anybody planning to apply for a
training contract at Hugh James.
James Gibson, Second Year Trainee
I attended the Summer Placement Scheme in 2005. I spent the
first week in Cardiff office in the Commercial Litigation
department and the second week at the Merthyr office in Nursing
Care. I was supervised during the first week by a trainee and by a
newly qualified solicitor in the second week. This meant that
I was able to get a flavour of the Firm from two different
perspectives. Both my supervisors made me feel very welcome and
involved from the first day of the scheme. It felt as though
everyone was keen to ensure that I got the best out of it. If there
was a quiet day in either of my allocated departments, my
supervisors would contact other trainees and take me to spend some
time in their departments. This allowed me to gain an insight into
other departments and trainee experiences at Hugh James. I
attended a conference with counsel, assisted in interviewing
clients, drafted briefs to counsel and was allowed to complete
other work that would typically be given to a trainee at the
Firm.
The Summer Placement Scheme was a very valuable experience and
the decisive factor in my choice to accept a training contract with
Hugh James. When I arrived on my first day as a trainee it was
reassuring to be welcomed back at a familiar Firm by familiar
faces.
‘There is a good sense of camaraderie amongst all trainees with
set events being arranged for lunch times or after work in addition
to the ‘quick catch ups’ in corridors, coffee shops and bars!’
