Housing law conference

Date: Thursday 17th November 2011

Venue: The Vale Hotel, Vale of Glamorgan

The annual Hugh James Housing Law Conference took place on Thursday 17 November at the Vale Resort Hotel and, as always, was very well attended with almost 100 delegates poised ready to take in the latest up to date legal developments from the industry. The conference welcomed a range of attendees from Solicitors and Housing Officers through to Heads of Housing and Chief Executives.

The conference welcomed presentations from an array of experienced industry representatives including Hugh James's very own Neil Morgan, Partner and Head of Social Housing, Jamie Saunders, Senior Associate and Head of Anti-Social Behaviour Unit and Deborah Carroll, Legal, Business and HR Trainer.

The conference was also attended by two external speakers:

Anne Jones, Assistant Information Commissioner for Wales

Janine Green, Anti-Social Behaviour Manager, Sandwell Council

Anne delved into the topic of data protection, providing top tips on how to comply with the Data Protection Act and Janine used her extensive experience to advise delegates on supporting vicitims of anti-social behaviour.

Topics covered by Hugh James included debt relief orders and bankruptcy, case law updates, possession, proportionality and the Equality Act. Deborah Carroll also demonstrated the Hugh James online data protection training tool. The tool sets out standards of expected behaviour throughout any organisation, on information use and abuse. Deborah showed how our the tool can be adapted to meet individual company requirements and enables employees to learn about data protection and thus how to prevent breaching data protection laws.
