Christmas is a time of giving and
receiving gifts. Unfortunately, they’re not always what we
want, but returning them can be a struggle, and in this tough
economic climate every penny counts.
If you are unsure what
your rights are when exchanging or refunding goods, Hugh James
Online can help - http://www.hughjames.co.uk/consumerrights.
The site provides shoppers with free online law guides which show
the rights you have when purchasing goods.
Research by the
environmental group Green Thing shows that shoppers in Britain
spent almost £2 billion on unwanted Christmas presents last year.
Moneysupermarket.com conducted a separate survey which showed that
the value of the average unwanted present was a staggering
£72.
Today [Friday 8 January]
is the 14th day after Christmas, and as most stores will
only exchange goods for up to 28 days after purchase, you will need
to act soon if you want a refund. Even Marks & Spencer,
who used to exchange for up to 90 days, will now only exchange
goods for up to 35 days.
Remember that you will
need the receipt if you want your money back. If someone else
bought the present using their credit or debit card, you won’t get
the money back, even with a receipt. However, you are still
entitled to ask for an exchange. If you don’t have a receipt,
most stores will swap the items or offer a credit note, providing
the goods have definitely been bought from the store.
