Hugh James Solicitors in Cardiff has been honoured for business mentoring, at a special awards ceremony held in Cardiff.

Careers Wales Cardiff and Vale held its seventh annual Most Valued Partner Awards at the St David’s Hotel and Spa, for organisations which made an outstanding contribution to Careers Wales activities throughout the previous year.

Careers Wales Cardiff and Vale provides free, impartial careers information, advice and guidance for all ages. The company’s Education Business Partnership (EBP), plays a major role in  brokering links between local employers,  schools and  colleges helping to raise student achievement and providing young people with opportunities to develop work related skills.

The awards ceremony, supported by British Gas, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, KTS Owens Thomas, and COS – the Complete Office Solution,  recognised support for a range of initiatives, including work experience, mentoring, the promotion of enterprise and business awareness, projects to promote social inclusion, the training and recruitment of young people, and support for teacher placements.

A Careers Wales spokesperson said: “This award for business mentoring is in recognition of the company’s support in providing over 30 volunteer mentors who are working with 70 students in two Cardiff schools.

Through the additional support, guidance and expertise offered by Hugh James business mentors the students are encouraged to achieve goals relating to high standards of attendance and work effort in school subjects. Ultimately this helps the students towards achieving their full potential in their GCSE examinations.”

Matthew Tossell, Managing Partner, Hugh James said “I am delighted that Hugh James has received this award. As a Firm we are focussed on working with benefiting our local community. The mentoring scheme has not only enabled us to engage with the school pupils to play a part in their development, but has also been fruitful and extremely fulfilling to all of the staff involved.  I believe that the award reflects our desire to give back to our local community and I am encouraged by what we have achieved so far.”

Mark Freeman, Chief Executive of Careers Wales Cardiff and Vale said “The stories behind these awards are evidence of the difference we can all make to individuals’ lives by working together.  Our combined knowledge, skills and experience can form a powerful force in helping young people and adults make the most of themselves and their opportunities, whatever their abilities or background.

“With the current economic climate it is more important than ever that we continue to work together to encourage individuals to engage in learning so that they can develop the skills, qualities and attitudes that employers are looking for now and in the future.

“I would like to congratulate all the award winners, who have all been nominated by staff from across Careers Wales Cardiff and Vale.”
