The Drinking Water Inspectorate is investigating the contamination of the River Lea in Hertfordshire after chemicals leaked into the drinking water supply at the sewage treatment works at Rye Meads, which is operated by Thames Water.

The utility company has confirmed that chemicals 2-EDD and 2-EMD entered the supply in February.

Approximately 1,000 residents have contacted Thames Water after noticing foul smelling and foul tasting drinking water, and about 100 residents have reported falling ill after drinking the water.

It is thought that around 2 million residents receive their drinking water from this works. Hugh James specialises in group action litigation, particularly in the fields of environmental law and personal injury.
