The exceptional achievements of
local solicitor, Lisa Morgan from Hugh James have been recognised
by the Law Society in its annual Excellence Awards.
Almost 600 leading lawyers and
their guests joined the President of the Law Society and BBC
Broadcaster Mishal Husain at the black tie dinner and presentation
ceremony at Old Billingsgate in London on Thursday 21 October.
Lisa, from the nursing care team at
Hugh James Solicitors won in the category of Junior Solicitor. Lisa
is widely respected and recognized as a leader in the niche area of
Continuing healthcare. The judges were impressed with the amount of
work she has carried out in an area largely neglected by the
profession, for encouraging others to get involved in this field of
law, using her legal skills to provide assistance and training to
others, and for the large amount of pro bono work and mentoring she
undertakes.
Continuing healthcare is where the NHS is responsible for care.
Problems mainly affect very ill patients, often elderly, in nursing
homes. In many cases, they have been forced to sell the family home
to pay for care, which escalates at an average cost of £600 per
week.
Lisa qualified as a solicitor in 2006 and was made associate
solicitor in 2009. This year she was promoted to senior associate.
Lisa says “I am thrilled and honored to be recognised by my peers
for the work I and the nursing care department have done. The
caliber of the finalists was extremely high and I am delighted to
have won.”
Lisa has been
instrumental in developing the nursing care
department. It has 20 fee earners and represent over
2,000 clients from England and Wales. Her department has
successfully recovered over £10 million in wrongly paid nursing
fees, as well as savings for the future.
Law Society President Linda Lee
said winning a Law Society Excellence Award is a huge achievement
and brings great recognition for individuals and firms.
"The winners of this year’s awards
should be very proud of this superb accolade. The awards reflect
the Law Society's commitment to celebrating excellence in the legal
profession.
"Winning an award is more than
recognition from their professional colleagues, it is also a symbol
of quality for members of the public.”
