The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, MHRA
(
http://www.mhra.gov.uk/) and
the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS)
(
http://www.baaps.gov.uk/)
have issued press statements in response to the worrying results
released by the French regulator, AFSSAPS’ following the testing
into the safety of PIP breast implants.
AFSSAPS conclude that their testing shows that
the performance and safety of PIP prostheses are not in accordance
with current expected standard. Please click here to read our full
story on the release of the French results.
The MHRA Clinical Director for Devices, Dr
Susanne Ludgate has stated that “It is important that we inform
implanted women in the UK of these findings. We are currently
seeking further advice from UK clinical and toxicology experts
following publication of these results. In the meantime, if women
have any concerns they should speak to their implanting
surgeon”.
BAAPS President Nigel Mercer has commented that:
“The BAAPS continues to recommend that women who’ve
undergone breast augmentation contact their surgeons to find out
what type of implant was used. If it’s PIP they should have an
ultrasound in the next six months to establish whether there is any
weakening or rupture. Removal of both implants is recommended in
these cases.”
Mark Harvey is now representing approximately
170 clients in relation to concerns over the safety of PIP breast
implants. Mr Harvey has already contacted all of his clients
to update them on these worrying results.
