Cancer death rates higher in Wales

New figures show that cancer, along
with dementia and heart disease is more likely to be fatal in Wales
than if you live in England.
Men are 5% more likely to die from
the disease and women 4.1% more likely.
The report shows that death rates
per 100,000 were higher across all registered causes of death,
apart from prostate cancer and pneumonia for men and self-harm for
women.
Of the registered causes of death,
cancer is the most common, claiming the lives of 4,543 men and
4,009 women in Wales in 2009.
Dr Ian Lewis, Tenovus’ head of
research, said: “These recent figures show that there is a higher
death rate due to cancer in Wales than in England. This is
reflective of a cancer incidence in Wales that is over 20% higher
than that in England.
“Much of this is due to the fact
Wales has the oldest population of the UK countries, but even when
this is taken into account, the incidence of cancer in Wales is
still around 10% higher than in England.
“We know that as many as half of
all cancers could be prevented if we made healthier lifestyle
choices and many cancers are treatable if they are detected early
enough.”
Cenric Clement-Evans, partner and
