Young child suffers from cerebral palsy after negligent medical treatment

Rhian Parsons, a solicitor in
Hugh James specialist clinical negligence team, has
recently concluded a case where a child suffered with cerebral
palsy as a result of negligent medical treatment she received as a
young baby.
The client was being treated on the
neonatal unit and required a longline insertion to aid treatment;
unfortunately the longline was improperly placed causing the baby’s
heart lining to be pierced. The resulting injury led to the baby
undergoing a cardiac arrest, which developed into a devastating
hypoxic brain injury as a consequence of dangerously low oxygen
levels.
It took a number of years to
reach a settlement in this clinical negligence case due to the
young age of the client and the complexity of the issues involved
but substantial damages were recovered running into millions of
pounds. The settlement was structured so that the client will
receive a payment every year for life.
Rhian Parsons from the clinical
negligence specialist team at Hugh James is quoted as saying
“It is very satisfying to have reached settlement of this case, it
was and will remain to be a very traumatic experience for the
client and her family with life changing consequences. The
settlement monies will ensure that the future of the client is
secure by providing care, appropriate accommodation, equipment and
therapy”
