application

Leading Welsh law firm, Hugh James
are currently working for clients from the finance, insurance and
retail sectors who have been affected in London and other cities
across the UK by the recent riots. They are advising any businesses
affected by the public disorder to submit their claims as early as
possible.
Under the Riot (Damages) Act 1886,
claims can be made to recover losses when a property is damaged,
destroyed or stolen. Even if the business was uninsured at the time
of damage, claims for compensation through the act can still be
completed. Those affected have 14 days in which to submit a claim
application; a deadline which has been extended to 42 days by the
Prime Minister to assist people who have been victims of damage to
their properties.
Tim Howorth, dispute resolution
solicitor, Hugh James says: “Businesses and individuals seeking a
claim should take photographs or video footage of the damage as
soon as possible, write notes of what has happened and when, name
any witnesses if appropriate and contact one of our solicitors who
will provide you with the relevant claim information in accordance
with the act. An application will be completed and submitted on
behalf of the claimant for compensation.”
Although the application process
can be completed by individuals directly, solicitors who are up to
speed on the Act and legislation can guide claimants through the
complex process and help submit the best claim. Compensation will
come from the local police authority for the affected area. They
receive the application forms and make the decision whether to
offer an award of compensation out of the police fund.
Health injuries as a result of the
riot, is not specifically mentioned in the act. However,
individuals may be eligible to claim for criminal injuries
compensation through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Act if they
have been the victim of a violent crime. Hugh James are leaders in
recovering compensation for personal injury claims and regularly
act for individuals affected by criminal injuries.
