Reaction to latest developments on PIP implants

Renowned campaigning lawyer
Mark Harvey, Partner
and head of the top ranked Personal Injury Team at Hugh James
solicitors, is acting for over 250 women with PIP implants.
Reacting to today’s French coverage, Mark Harvey says:
“We welcome the decision
announced this morning by the French authorities which recommends
that all women in France with PIP breast implants have them removed
as a precautionary measure; it reflects what we have always asked
for, which is a suitable protocol for women who have been affected
by these implants.
“We also welcome the news that
the cost of these operations will be covered by the French
Government. However, in the UK, it is our strong belief that
those clinics that are still in existence should be ordered by the
Government to remove and replace PIP implants free of charge,
rather than placing the onus on the NHS.
“The recent reports have, of
course, been very worrying to our clients, many of whom have
already suffered terrible problems as a result of their
implants. It is reassuring that no further health risk has
been identified, but I am dismayed at how developments have been
handled this week as they may have caused unnecessary panic and
worry to these women.
“Earlier this week, I wrote
again to the MHRA, to urge them to react to the developments in
France and, similarly to France, to set up a suitable protocol for
women affected in this country.
“I do not believe that MHRA’s
reaction to date has been satisfactory; it is unbelievable that the
MHRA have not ensured that they were involved with the
consultations in France about a product that affects such a large
amount of women in this country. I am and have been very
critical of their role throughout the history of this product. This
stems from allowing this company to sell these implants in the UK
in the first place; their refusal to respond when I alerted them to
the problems; their refusal to disclose their tests data to us;
their refusal to meet with any of my clients to discuss their
concerns and now this latest health concern.”
