Legal Ombudsman advises against unregulated companies

The first Legal Ombudsman report
reveals thousands of people may be receiving sub-standard services
from unregulated companies offering consumer financial
products.
Chief Ombudsman for
England and Wales Adam Sampson has called on the Government to take
action to ensure consumers are not left vulnerable by unregulated
services as clients are left “powerless” and “with little means of
redress” when claims go wrong.
He went on to say that
“In many cases clients believe they are getting a legal service
though often the work is being carried out by non-authorised
personnel.”
Malcolm Evans, partner at Cardiff based
solicitors Hugh James, said “Nursing care claims in particular are
often very complex and need to be handled by expert lawyers with a
track record in this area.”
“Over the last few years
there has been a proliferation of non-regulated claims management
companies offering to do this type of work”
Des Hudson, chief executive of the
Law Society for England and Wales, said the gap in regulation was
damaging to solicitors, who faced competition from unregulated
firms.
"It is also damaging to consumers
because the unregulated providers are not insured, do not provide a
compensation fund and are not covered by the legal ombudsman's
scheme for consumer redress," he added.
