The training department of Wales’ leading law firm has been shortlisted in the Law Society Excellence Awards 2011 for Excellence in Learning and Development.

The awards reward and promote excellence across the legal profession and celebrate outstanding achievement in areas that are central to the profession today. They will demonstrate that legal firms continue to innovate and to deliver work of the highest quality despite the challenging economic climate. This is the second year in a row that Hugh James has been recognized for delivering excellence within its departments.

Hugh James’ head of training, Helen Iles, says of the achievement: “I am extremely proud of the team we have here at Hugh James and delighted that we have been recognised as a quality training unit which adds value to our more traditional legal offering by the most prestigious awards in the legal calendar.”

John Wotton, Law Society President said of this year’s entries: "The standard of entries for this year's Excellence Awards has been exceptionally high, and selecting the shortlist has been a challenge for the judges. The firms and individuals shortlisted should be very proud. Their excellence and innovation stood out among very impressive candidates. The Excellence Awards are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate what is great about the legal profession, which in recent years has experienced a turbulent economic climate and now faces the challenges created by the introduction of ABS."

The training team at Hugh James has developed over the past few years in order to identify individual training needs and deliver methods effectively to match the growing and ever changing requirements of businesses. Mrs Iles adds: “We have quite a drive at present to push our training department and the fact we offer training, not only on essential legal updates but also on soft skills and IT courses, it makes us quite unique within the legal sector.”

To add to the list of recent achievements, the training department has also received formal endorsement from the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) for their interactive DVD training courses. The DVD's cover a range of topics including; Disciplinary and grievance, Sickness and absence, Dignity at work and Performance Management. The ILM stamp means that the Hugh James suite of DVD’s appears on the ILM's "recommended" list, placing them amongst established training providers.

Winners of the Excellence Awards will be announced at the awards dinner on 18 October 2011 at Old Billingsgate.
