If proposals to build a second runway go ahead affected residents may be able to claim compensation under the Land Compensation Act 1973. The right to compensation arises when the value of an interest in land is depreciated by physical factors such as noise, vibration, smell, smoke, fumes, artificial lighting etc. caused by the use of public works. The Act specifically includes physical factors caused by aircraft arriving or departing from an airport.
