The Environment Group at Hugh James are investigating a claim about residents living in the
Norton Aluminium operate a scrap aluminium melting and foundry process at the site which is close to residential properties.
Local residents say that they have experienced problems with odour dust and noise from the site. Residents say that they have to keep windows and doors closed to prevent the odour, dust and noise entering their homes.
They claim that they have been unable to enjoy their homes and gardens are a result of the problems and sleep is regularly disturbed.
Residents are concerned that property prices in the area may be affected, with some residents noting that property appears to be taking a long time to sell.
In February 2006 the Environment Agency prosecuted Norton Aluminium for failing to take action to ensure its operation did not cause pollution to the environment, which includes the effect on local residents.
The company was fined £6,000 and ordered to pay a further £4,000 in costs as a result of the prosecution. Norton Aluminium was also ordered to fit a properly engineered fume extraction and abatement system to the casting foundry to alleviate these problems.
This was to be completed by May 2006 but residents report that the problems continue.

We are investigating pursing a group legal action against the operators of the Site for compensation for odour, dust and noise pollution as well as an injunction to stop Norton Aluminium from continuing the nuisance in the future.
