Have a say...
Human rights take centre stage
The society we live in has changed dramatically over the last few years, but one thing is sure, your human rights have never been in better shape. Under the Human Rights Act you can legitimately claim if you feel your human rights have been affected by the actions of others. Do you think you know your rights and who would you turn to in the event of an alleged abuse of your human rights?
Your Rights, Our Advice
The Hugh James Human Rights Department offers a dedicated service providing advice on all human rights matters. If your rights have been infringed, you may be able to argue a point under the Human Rights Act and bring a claim through the courts. In addition, public bodies such as the police, public transport and the NHS may also have the same duties not to infringe your human rights.
Hugh James has vast experience in all areas of the law affected by the Human Rights Act. If the letter of the law lets you down, there might be a human rights argument to pursue.
Rights Explained
Your human rights can take many forms but include, for example, the right to your private, family and home life; the right to freedom of expression; the right to a fair hearing; the right not to be discriminated against and the right to peaceful enjoyment of your property. While many of us may take these rights for granted, they soon become of value in the event of a problem affecting these basic rights. Issues we have advised on in the past include schooling, planning, care proceedings and tribunals. To help you fund a claim under the Human Rights Act you may be entitled to assistance through the Community Legal Services or a ‘no win, no fee’ arrangement.
Human Rights Track Record
Not only does Hugh James work to defend basic rights but we are also active in the community - encouraging young people to explore their own ideas of human rights through the innovative and award-winning Valleys Kids project. The project formed part of an ‘imagination generation’ initiative which has facilitated a rewarding partnership generating mutual insight, respect and creativity. This culminated in Hugh James wining the National Arts and Business Award 2006.
