Asbestos
Statistics compiled by the Government show that there will be an increase in the number of asbestos related diseases diagnosed over the next 20-30 years which will affect about 100,000 people.
The amount of people dying from malignant mesothelioma – a particularly nasty form of cancer caused by asbestos – is expected to peak in about 2020.
Asbestos was much used in the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s. After being exposed to asbestos dust the asbestos fibres can lie dormant in lungs for many years: usually between 10 and 50 or 60 years before there are any symptoms. It is because of this ‘latency period’ that the peak is expected over the next 20-30 years.
This is the harsh reality.
These are awful diseases but we can at least make sure families are not left in a financial mess.
