Nerve damage

Nerves are responsible for controlling sensitivity and sensation in most parts of the body.

Nerve damage often result in either loss of sensation or enhanced sensation such as pain.

A damaged nerve can arise from inadequately performed surgery.

Nerve damage symptoms

Accidental nerve damage is one of the most serious and painful things that can happen to your body.  It is debilitating. Sufferers may be unable to work or indeed function as normal.

Symptoms of nerve damage can include:

  • Legs or arms feel heavy
  • Difficulty lifting up foot or toes
  • Difficulty picking up or holding objects, or manipulating them in your hand
  • Arm or leg feels like “pins and needles” or are numb
  • Cold feeling in arm or leg
  • Burning or “electrical” feeling

Loss of sensation may also lead to loss of function of the body part controlled by that particular nerve or nerves.

Causes of nerve damage

Accidental nerve damage can be caused in many ways:

  • administration of certain toxic drugs
  • direct physical damage due to the different procedures including cutting, burning, stretching or compression
  • excessive force used to deliver a baby leading to an injury in the brachial plexus
  • excessive physical traction
  • improper administration of anti blood clotting drugs
  • inadvertent injection of certain drugs into or around the surrounding area of a nerve
  • insufficient blood supply causing oxygen starvation to the nerves
  • direct compression to a nerve due to application of a tourniquet
  • blood pressure build up in the vicinity of a nerve due to a damaged blood vessel.
  • unwarranted nerve pressure due to improper positioning of the body during a surgical operation
