  • Stephen Webber, head of clinical negligence and partner at Hugh James comments on the recent Bridgend teenager who received £6.5 million in compensation after being left with cerebral palsy:
" This is a tragic case and it not clear why it has taken so long for this case to be resolved as I would not have expected a case to take this long. Clinical negligence cases are very complex and it can take a number of years for cases to resolve particularly when the defendents fight the case and the extent of the claimant's disabilities are developing over a long time.

Many people will think that £6.5 million is a huge sum of money but this compensation will not be paid in one lump sum but there will be a smaller lump sum then annual payments for the rest of the claimant's life. The compensation will have to pay for 24 hour care for the rest of the claimant's life. This type for care package can cost hundreds of thousands of pounds every year."
