Social housing

Mererid has experience of advising both private and public sector clients on a range of commercial issues. She also spent time on secondment to the Commercial teams in Welsh Government and As part of her practice, Mererid has advised extensively on governance issues with a particular interest in good governance within the housing sector. Mererid is also an experienced trainer having presented to a variety of clients on governance issues, in addition to delivering a range of training and workshop sessions at board, senior management and staff-level across the housing, education, charities, construction, banking and legal sectors.

Having worked extensively within the social housing sector, Mererid has assisted RSLs in setting up a subsidiary RSL/company/Industrial and Provident Society using CHC Model Rules, whilst assisting on the process of obtaining approval from the Board, regulator and FCA as appropriate. She has also advised a large housing association on whether a range of innovative projects, aimed at diversifying its revenue streams, were within vires and alternative structures to achieve aims. Additionally, she has advised a housing association on working collaboratively with local authorities and on the Schedule 1 Housing Act 1996 in respect of conflict of interest issues.

Mererid has also advised on the mergers of Further Education Colleges and charities including undertaking the appropriate due diligence work, preparing reports for the board of governors/trustees and, where appropriate, liaising with the regulator. Furthering her work with charities, she has advised on transfer agreements and liaised with the Charity Commission.

Having significant experience advising on data protection, Mererid’s work has seen her undertake an audit of clients data processing activities, review and update their data protection policies and procedures, including preparing internal and external facing privacy policies and advise on GDPR compliant data processing agreements.

Work history

Mererid qualified in 2003 having trained at a high street practice in Swansea. Upon qualification, Mererid join the Commercial team at Blake Morgan, where she worked until 2018, before moving into a Consultancy position. Mererid joined Hugh James as a Consultant in 2019.
