Aled Walters is a Partner and Head of the Commercial team at Hugh James.  Aled was formerly an in-house lawyer at broadcaster, S4C, where he handled the drafting and negotiation of extremely varied commercial contracts, including significant, high-value rights contracts with the Welsh Rugby Union and the Welsh F.A. He also had responsibility for all the legal work of S4C’s commercial subsidiary, S4C International.

Currently he advises on corporate and commercial matters in particular within the betting, gaming, television and media industries and advises some of the largest gaming, gambling and betting businesses in the world. His work includes drafting and negotiation of business sale and purchase agreements, shareholder agreements and extremely high value commercial contracts, IP licensing arrangements and media contracts including co-production agreements.

Aled’s recent work includes acting for:

  • Green Bay Media on its sale to Wildflame Productions
  • Media industry contract for Teledwyr Annibynnol Cymru (TAC)
  • Avanti Media on Sky Vision increased shareholding
  • Avanti Media, on all legal matters relating to the high profile tender win from the BBC to produce Songs of Praise
  • Novomatic AG to acquire the casino in Gibraltar
  • Astra Games to acquire the business and trade of 82 amusement arcades from the Nobles Group
  • Astra Games to acquire the business of Bell-Fruit, Gamestec, RLMS and Mazooma to form one of the biggest gaming companies in the UK
  • Playtech plc  (a FTSE 250 Company) on its acquisition of Weedi Ltd
  • Bell-Fruit on its contractual arrangements with “Queen”, EMI and Universal for the use of the “Queen” brand name likeness and music on Bell-Fruit gaming machines
  • Bell-Fruit on its licence with Endemol in respect  of the use of “Deal or No Deal” and with Hasbro Games in relation to “Monopoly”

He advises on-line gaming operators and AIM – listed Netplay TV Group plc on various commercial and corporate matters and gives regulatory and commercial advice on on-line payment arrangements. He advises one of the world’s largest casino equipment suppliers on corporate and commercial matters as well as the rapidly expanding Rainbow Casino group.

 

Aled is a Trustee and Honorary Counsel of Urdd Gobaith Cymru. He is also a Trustee of Menter Caerdydd, a member of the Court of the National Eisteddfod of Wales and a member of the Royal Television Society.

He is a fluent Welsh speaker and semi-professional musician. His other recreational interests include watching rugby, playing golf and skiing.
