Pension auto enrolment

As from the 1 October 2012, the Government introduced substantial changes to pensions law which will affect all employers with at least one worker in the UK.

Soon all employers in the UK will have to automatically enrol their staff into a qualifying pension scheme in a national aim to get more people saving for their future

Employers will be required to:

  • automatically enrol certain workers into a pension scheme;
  • make contributions on their workers’ behalf;
  • register with The Pensions Regulator; and
  • provide workers with certain information about the changes and how they will affect them.

As people live longer, we are seeing more years spent in retirement. The State pension is unlikely to be enough to maintain your current lifestyle when you retire. The challenge therefore remains, how you support yourself through a longer retirement. Auto enrolment provides a great opportunity for employees to save for the future and build their desired retirement income.

There are various steps to the auto enrolment process – for more information please see our dedicated auto enrolment pages.

At Hugh James, we offer a combined unique service of both independent financial advice and employment law advice that can help you as employers clarify your position within the new legislation.

If you require any advice regarding auto enrolment, please contact Louise Price, Partner, Employment and HR Services or Suzanne Browne, Head of Financial Services at Hugh James.
