On Tuesday 7 April the Medicines & Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) issued a medical device alert for various intraocular lenses produced by HOYA Surgical Optics. Those affected may be entitled to claim personal injury compensation.

What is an intraocular lens?

An intraocular lens (IOL) is similar to a contact lens but is implanted rather than placed over the eye. They are commonly used as a replacement for the crystalline lens as a remedy for cataracts. An IOL can also be used in addition to the existing natural lens, helping patients suffering from myopia.

The HOYA surgical optics intraocular lens

The IOL produced by HOYA Surgical Optics has been issued with a medical device alert after the company identified traces of residual foreign particles in various models of their IOL. The intraocular lenses issued with the alert are:

  • NY-60
  • Toric 311
  • iSert Toric 351
  • iSert 250
  • iSert 251

Symptoms of failure

Those implanted with the HOYA IOL may suffer discomfort, redness, and loss of vision. In the more serious cases, patients could suffer an acute bacterial endophthalmitis, which can cause permanent loss of vision or the loss of the eye itself. Others may suffer from an acute inflammatory response which requires lengthy treatment. If you are suffering from any symptoms or are concerned you should contact your GP immediately.
