Our Hugh James metal on metal hip replacement compensation solicitors represent patients who have suffered personal injury as a result of receiving the controversial metal on metal hip implant. The implant is linked to numerous health issues, and our team of specialist solicitors can help you make a metal on metal hip compensation claim.
Following the recent announcement by the MHRA, the government’s health regulator, that they advise all metal on metal hip replacement patients to be monitored annually, Hugh James Head of Harmful Products, Mark Harvey stated: “Hugh James solicitors are representing over 100 DePuy ASR and other metal on metal patients. We have seen the immense distress that early failure of these implants can cause. We are glad to see that the MHRA has recommended annual blood testing of all metal on metal hip patients. As part of the metal on metal hip compensation claims we are pursuing the cost of annual check-ups, and if necessary future treatments are being included”.
The metal on metal hip replacement was first introduced to the UK in the 1990s. The system uses a metal ball and cup, which when combined form a replica hip joint. Manufacturers use a coating to lubricate the metal cup and ball system in an attempt to prevent friction and wear. The coating on a number of these hip replacement systems has been ineffective, resulting in fragments of metal being released into the body, causing soft tissue damage also known as soft tissue necrosis. In other cases the coupling has failed to trap the body’s natural fluids, allowing the two metal parts to rub together, to the same effect.
The Medicines and Healthcare Product Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has investigated the dangers faced by metal-on-metal hip replacement systems, with an expert advisory group set up to look at the management of patients. In February 2012 the MHRA issued updated recommendations which advise that affected metal-on-metal hip replacement patients should be monitored annually for the life of the hip replacement. This superseded previous advice which called for patients to be monitored for a minimum of five years following surgery.
