Having an up to date will is extremely important. Our aim is to make it as easy as possible for you for you to achieve that.

To get started, there are three points to consider:

  1. What type of service suits you best?
We offer face to face meetings at your offices, telephone or online service options. The details for each option are set out below.
  2. What type of will suits your needs?
Again, we have set out the options below. These will be discussed with you in more detail in due course and you will be able to change your mind. However, you will be asked to give your initial views when you book an appointment, to help us to give you a preliminary quote and to make sure that you are allocated a suitable will writer.
  3. Do you require a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)?
If you think you might require one or more LPA, you may consider that it makes sense to see to this at the same time as writing your will, and we can assist. When you book an appointment, you will therefore be asked whether you also require them. Our LPA brochure provides further information; you can download it here: Lasting Powers of Attorney

Video: The importance of having an up to date will

We have recently produced this short video to highlight the importance of having an up to date will. Click the image below to play the video.

“Did you know that 60%* of UK adults don’t have a will? The above video highlights why everyone should make sure they have a valid will. (a survey of 2,000 people by Macmillan Cancer Support 2017).”

Will writing service options

At Hugh James, we pride ourselves on catering for everyone. Whether you require a relatively straightforward will or you’re in need of complex tax advice, we have a service option to suit your needs. The service delivery options for wills are listed below. Please click the down arrow to read more about each option and for links to start the will writing process.

This offering includes the opportunity to meet with us at a will writing surgery, at your office. A list of forthcoming will writing surgeries is available in our booking system, which you can access by clicking the button below.

We offer our face-to-face service for wills where general tax and trusts advice is sufficient. If specific advice about a particular tax point or a detailed bespoke report is required, then this can also be provided via face-to-face meetings but it may be treated as falling within our bespoke service (see below).

This offering includes our comprehensive will writing instruction form and you will be able to go through the will writing instruction form with a qualified wills adviser who can answer any queries you may have. A draft will is then prepared by us and sent to you for consideration.

Upon receipt of that draft, our wills adviser is available over the phone to address any queries and to make any amendments. Once the draft is finalised, you will have a final meeting at your office to go over the will one last time and for us to oversee the execution and act as witnesses. This is to ensure that the document is fully legally compliant. Once it is executed, the will is stored by us free of charge.

If you think this is the right service for you click the button below to book your face-to-face appointment. After you have made an appointment, you will be sent our will writing pack, to complete and return prior to your appointment. We will then contact you again to confirm the cost of your will and take payment on account. This process enables us to attend our meeting with you as prepared as possible, but you should please note that, to allow sufficient time for that, it will not be possible to book a will surgery appointment less than two weeks in advance.

Please note that if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland then Brodies LLP or O’Reilly Stewart Solicitors will fulfil the writing of your will.

This option is ideal for those who may not have the time to attend a face-to-face meeting but want to have a conversation and seek guidance from one of our experts.

As with our face-to-face service, we offer our telephone service for wills where general tax and trusts advice is sufficient. If specific advice about a particular tax point or a detailed bespoke report is required then this can also be provided via telephone meetings but, again, it may be treated as falling within our bespoke service (see below).

With our telephone service, we provide a comprehensive will writing instruction form which highlights any issues that require consideration and assists in determining the best way to give effect to your wishes.

A qualified wills adviser is available on the telephone to go through the will writing instruction form and answer any of your queries. They will then prepare and send a draft of your will to you.

Upon receipt of that draft, our wills adviser is available again on the telephone to address any queries and make any amendments that may be necessary. Once a draft is finalised, a final version is sent for execution, along with a detailed guide as to how to do so. Once it is executed, the will is stored free of charge.

Click the button below if you think our telephone service is right for you. Once you have logged in and entered your details you can request an initial call from us. After your initial call, you will be sent our will writing pack, to complete and return. Once this is returned, will then contact you again to confirm the cost of your will, take payment on account and book you in for a call with one of our will writers to discuss the details of your will.

Please note that if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland then Brodies LLP or O’Reilly Stewart Solicitors will fulfil the writing of your will.

This is our most straightforward and simplistic will writing service. This will best suit you if you know how you want your assets distributed and do not need to make complicated provisions.

You will use our will writing software and extensive precedents suite to write your own will.

If you are clear on what you wish to achieve and if what you want is uncontroversial, this option may suit you. This option is self-sufficient; there is no legal advice provided and no interaction with our lawyers. You can access this service by clicking the button below.

If you subsequently decide that this service is not suitable for you, or the platform advises that to be the case, then you will be directed back to this page so that you can choose another option.

Please note that the online will writing platform is not currently available to those in Scotland or Northern Ireland.

This offering is most suitable for those who are likely to require in depth and bespoke tax and estate planning advice before finalising their wills.

It includes all of the components of our face to face or telephone offering (depending on your preference), with the option of a full written tax report based on individual circumstances, providing comprehensive advice on your personal tax position and bespoke planning advice. This offering may also incorporate the drafting of further documents pursuant to our advice, such as trust deeds or letters of wishes.

As each individual’s needs are different, we quote for prices via this service on a case-by-case basis but will always endeavour to agree a fixed fee.

Our bespoke service can be provided via either a telephone or face to face appointment by clicking one of the buttons below and, once you have logged in, indicating that you may require a bespoke will. In those circumstances one of our senior solicitors will call you first for a no obligation ‘scoping call’ at the outset, in order to assess precise needs and provide an accurate estimate before any work begins. After that, you will be sent our will writing pack, to complete and return. We will then contact you again to confirm the cost of your will and take payment on account prior to your appointment. This process enables us to attend our meeting with you as prepared as possible but, for face-to-face meetings, you should please note that, to allow sufficient time for that, it will not be possible to book a will surgery appointment less than two weeks in advance.
