Formerly a Partner at Clarke Willmott for over a decade, Phil brings 30 years’ experience of serious personal injury claims to the firm and is dedicated to supporting families and helping them at their times of need and also has specialist expertise in dealing with inquests.

Having handled some of the highest value claims in the UK over time – including claims which have had a value in excess of £20m – Phil is accustomed to lecturing widely to lawyers and medics and has contributed to books produced by the PEOPIL Research Group about personal injury and fatal claims which were presented to European Parliament.

Phil has worked for clients who have suffered amputation, brain injury, spinal cord injury and polytrauma and supports many charities relevant to our work including Brake – the road safety charity, Headway (the brain injury association) and a CBIT (the Child Brain Injury Trust).

Headed up by Partners Cari Sowden-Taylor and Ciaran McCabe, the firm’s national Serious Injury practice has grown into one of the UK’s most respected catastrophic injury teams, delivering landmark settlements and award-winning client care nationwide.

With 50 specialists working across the firm’s UK offices, and recognised by Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners, our Serious Injury team’s expertise and growing national presence signals their standing as a leader in the serious injury sector. This latest appointment marks yet another significant step in our growth strategy.

Joint Head of our Serious Injury team, Cari Sowden-Taylor commented:

“We are delighted to welcome Phil Edwards to our team. Phil is one of the country’s leading personal injury litigators, with vast experience in the most serious and complex cases, including brain injury, spinal injury, and amputation. He is an APIL-accredited Senior Litigator and APIL Brain Injury Specialist and has worked closely with many of the charities that we have supported for years. Phil shares our core principles at Hugh James — putting clients at the heart of everything we do — and is committed to securing the very best outcomes. Acting for both children and adults, his skill, dedication, and determination make him an exceptional advocate for those he represents.”

Speaking of joining the firm, Phil Edwards said:

“I am equally delighted and excited to be joining Hugh James. The firm’s reputation in the serious injury field is second to none. As Cari says, Hugh James is committed to putting clients at the centre of everything, focusing on rehabilitation and helping clients achieve the best quality of life after life changing events, and this exactly mirrors my own approach and ethos that I have had throughout my career. I am looking forward to becoming part of the team here and continuing to deliver for clients going forwards.”
