Charities, communities & CSR

As a large employer and successful business we take our responsibilities to supporting the communities in which our staff and clients work and live very seriously. However, our staff undertake a vast amount of voluntary work not because they have to, but because they want to.

All of our teams are given time off work each year to support a voluntary initiative of their choice. Some choose to support initiatives coordinated by the firm and others choose projects where they have a personal attachment.

Many of our teams choose to support initiatives where their legal work aligns with the work of certain charities or support groups. Examples of this include our Neurolaw team supporting brain injury charity, Headway our social housing lawyers providing voluntary support to housing associations, our catastrophic injury lawyers partnering with air ambulance charities and our Nursing Care team providing support to Age Cymru/UK.

In addition to empowering staff to pursue voluntary and fundraising activities of their choice, the firm also chooses to support a range of charities and initiatives throughout each year. Read about our HJ Heroes for further information.

Our nominated charities and partnerships

Throughout 2022 the firm will be supporting a number of charities in different ways. Our three headline charities are:

  1. Ty Hafan
  2. Theodora Children’s Charity
  3. Velindre Cancer Centre

These charities will receive a donation from the firm and the proceeds from our dress down days throughout the year.

We have also established partnerships with several charities where the interests of our clients align with the focus of the charity. These include Headway, Age Cymru/UK, NSPCC Cymru and Wales Air Ambulance amongst others.

Pro Bono

Our nursing care team has a long standing relationship with Cardiff Law School and offers pro bono legal advice to vulnerable people around the delicate issue of reclaiming wrongly paid care fees.

Providing pro bono legal services means vulnerable people and organisations have access to free legal representation. This could mean individuals, charities or community groups who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford legal representation or be able to access funding.

Dreams and Wishes project

As part of one of our previous initiatives, we worked with Dreams and Wishes to help raise awareness of what the charity does and how it operates.

Dreams and Wishes is run on a completely voluntary basis with 100% of donations being spent on the children and their wishes. Because of this their team has limited marketing resources and so often finds it a challenge to get the message of what they do out there. We’ve worked with them to help produce a video that tells its story.

As many of our staff and clients raised money for Dreams and Wishes through events, dress down days and fundraisers, we thought we’d share the video with you so you can see first-hand how your donations were spent and the difference it made to the families involved.

We hope you can take 10 minutes out of your day to watch this video as your donations have helped Dreams and Wishes deliver their incredible work.

Emergency Fund

We have established an emergency fund to help when people need it most. When someone has suffered a catastrophic injury the impact has wide-reaching repercussions. It turns a family’s life upside down, not just emotionally but financially as well.

Travel, accommodation, and childcare are just a few of the considerations that must be addressed. We understand the extra financial strain that this may put on individuals and families so the fund is our way of offering support at a time of crisis.
