Hugh James appointed to provide Employment Law Services to South Wales Fire and Rescue Service

Following a competitive tender process, we have been appointed as the provider of Employment Law Services to the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS).

Throughout the four-year agreement, which commenced on 1st May 2025, we will be called upon to provide comprehensive employment law advice covering general employment issues, specialised pension advice including Local Government and Firefighters’ pension schemes, and litigation support inclusive of court representation.

Commenting on the appointment, Louise Price, Partner and Head of Employment and HR services, said:

“We are delighted to partner with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, supporting their critical operations through our expert employment law services. Our experienced team understands the complex environment in which SWFRS operates, and we’re committed to providing proactive, robust legal support tailored to their specific needs. We look forward to a successful partnership over the coming years, ensuring that they can continue their vital work.”

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, formed in 1996, serves an extensive area covering rural, industrial, coastal, and urban regions across nearly 1,085 square miles. With 47 stations and multiple administrative locations, the Service employs approximately 1,800 personnel, including Wholetime Firefighters, Firefighters on the Retained Duty System, Fire Control staff and non-uniformed support staff.

Alison Reed, Assistant Chief Officer, People Services said:

“We are pleased to work with the team at Hugh James. Their advice will be invaluable as we continue our journey of transformational change, putting people at the heart of all that we do.”

This appointment marks the third significant public sector tender secured this year, following recent successes including our reappointment to the major four-year Welsh Government Legal Services framework and appointment to a four-year framework agreement to provide first-class legal services to the Welsh Language Commissioner, underscoring our well established reputation and leadership position within the public sector in Wales.
