Starting out as a paralegal
Many trainee solicitors begin their careers in supporting roles — and those experiences can be invaluable.
My time at Hugh James began as a paralegal, where I quickly felt the energy and ambition that runs through the firm. Even then, I knew I was in the right place: a firm that values contribution, encourages curiosity and supports growth at every step.
Beginning my training contract
A training contract is designed to challenge, develop and prepare future solicitors.
In 2023, I started my training contract, an opportunity that challenged me and developed me in equal measure. From the outset, I was encouraged to get involved and make a real difference. Each seat brought something new: drafting documents, working directly with clients and learning from colleagues who are experts in their fields. The structure of the training contract, with its mix of supervision, feedback, and responsibility, helped me build both my legal knowledge and my confidence.
Transitioning to a newly qualified solicitor
Moving from trainee to NQ is a big step, but the right support makes the journey smoother.
As I transitioned to a newly qualified solicitor, I realised how well prepared I felt. The support at Hugh James is second to none. Everyone is committed to your development and there is a strong sense of community that underpins everything we do. I have always felt able to ask questions, to try new things, and to take on responsibility, knowing there is a network of support around me.
Lessons learned along the way
Training as a solicitor is not just about technical expertise — it’s about developing as a person too.
I have learned a lot about myself, not just as a lawyer, but as a person. I have become more adaptable, resilient and genuinely invested in delivering the best outcomes for clients. I am proud of my ability to remain calm under pressure, to work collaboratively and to keep learning with each new challenge. My motivation comes from knowing I can make a real difference for people and businesses, and I look forward to building lasting relationships and finding solutions to even the most complex problems.
Support and development at Hugh James
The culture of support and growth is what makes Hugh James stand out as a law firm.
Becoming newly qualified is a big step, but I have never felt alone. Whether through structured development sessions, informal mentorship, or simply day-to-day encouragement from colleagues, I have always felt backed and included. The focus is not just on technical excellence, but on being resilient, commercially aware and becoming a key component of the business.
Looking ahead as an NQ solicitor
Qualification is just the beginning of a longer journey in law.
I am grateful for the variety of experiences and the unwavering support that have shaped me. Qualifying as a solicitor at Hugh James is not just a new job title but rather an invitation to make a difference and to continue to develop. I am proud to be part of a firm that values courage, commitment, and contribution and I am excited for everything that comes next.
