Hats at Home for Headway

Headway is a charity which provides support and services to brain injury survivors, their families and carers. In addition, Headway campaigns to reduce the incidence of brain injury.

Hugh James has worked closely with Headway UK and Headway Cardiff  and South East Wales for over 30 years and continues to do so. Many of our brain injured clients receive much-needed support from the specialist charity which is lifeline for many families.

The 11-17 May 2020 was due to be Action for Brain Injury (ABI) Week which is held annually, with theme this year, focusing on memory loss. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus pandemic, ABI Week has been postponed until later in the year (date to be confirmed). However, Hats for Headway which is always held on the Friday of ABI Week, is to go ahead under the new name, this year, of Hats at Home for Headway. Headway is asking supporters to get involved by donning a hat at home, sending a picture and donating to Headway.

Every year at Hugh James, we enjoy the opportunity to wear a silly hat to work and support the charity to raise awareness of brain injuries-this year is no different,  although we will be wearing our silly hats ( along with our kids and pets) as we work from home!

If you’re on social media, please join us and share your picture with #HatsforHeadway to help raise awareness of brain injury.

We shall be donating to Headway Cardiff and South East Wales, which was established in 1985. Based in Rookwood Hospital, Llandaff, the charity provides vital support 4 days a week which includes the Independence and Wellbeing Centre, Information and Outreach, Welfare Benefits and Counselling Services, and a monthly Family and Friends group. They also reach out into the community and their Information and Outreach Officers visit people wherever needed. In addition, they run weekly social and activity groups that meet in various locations in Cardiff and Pontypool. Andrew Harding, Head of the Neurolaw Department at Hugh James is the long standing Chairman of Headway Cardiff and South East Wales and he is also a Trustee of Headway UK.

As a member of the Fundraising Committee for Headway Cardiff and South East Wales, I am more conscious than ever of the financial pressures on the charity. As a committee, we had several events planned over spring and summer of 2020 including a spectacular "Greatest Showman" themed summer ball which sadly has had to be postponed due to the pandemic.  If you are able to help support this small local charity which last year provided support to 486 people with acquired brain injury and 80 family members across south east Wales, it will make a huge difference to the charity. A bar code, which can be scanned to make donating easier, has been included in our photo.
