ACARB eye gel, AACOMER eye gel and PUROPTICS eye gel claims

These products have been recalled as a precaution by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) with a Field Safety Notice because of the risk of contamination of specific brands with a bacteria called Burkholderia cenocepacia which causes serious lung infections.

Hugh James have received enquiries from injured clients and are investigating claims for compensation for those affected by this infection.

The eye gel is used to treat dry eyes. The product is manufactured by Indiana Ophthalmics LLP. It was distributed in the UK by Trion Pharma, Essential Healthcare and Biovantic. Although the risk to the general public is considered to be very low those patients who have any serious lung conditions, such as cystic fibrosis, are at a higher risk of adverse effects.

The affected products were distributed from August to November 2023 with patients now being advised to stop use of the product and to return it to the point of sale. They should contact healthcare professionals for advice if they are affected by the infection.

The bacterial infection enters through the tear ducts and into the lungs causing a serious lung infection which can be antibiotic resistant and very difficult to treat.

Compensation has been recovered for many victims of harmful products such as ordinary household products as well as medical and pharmaceutical devices.

Our product liability lawyers:

  • assist some of the 700,000 or so people who are injured each year and wish to seek compensation for their losses – and we can assist those who have been injured and who could claim but feel unable to
  • investigate each potential claim thoroughly and offer early and ongoing assessments as to the prospects of success in your claim and the likely level of compensation and other remedies you may be entitled to
  • help clients who have suffered relatively minor injuries and those who have had the misfortune to suffer catastrophic and life-changing injuries
  • work to the highest service standards so that we conclude your case as quickly as possible with the right remedy
  • work on conditional fee agreements (no win, no fee) so that if we don’t win your case there is no bill to pay

We can take you through the process of making a claim for compensation. In addition to your pain and suffering, you could be entitled to your out-of-pocket expenses incurred in seeking remedial treatment, time off work and care needs. If you or a relative has suffered injury as a result of this product, call a member of our team for a no obligation discussion of your options to gain compensation.
