Hugh James advises Hedyn on purchase of new headquarters

We are pleased to have advised Hedyn on the acquisition of its new headquarters in Newport, supporting the company’s continued growth and consolidation plans in South Wales.

The new HQ will be located at the former Royal Mail building on Mill Street, close to the M4 and directly behind Newport train station.

The move is a natural next step in Hedyn’s continued growth following the 2025 merger of Melin and Newport City Homes. The merger created an organisation of 750 staff and more than 15,000 homes across southeast Wales.

Our team advised Hedyn on all legal aspects of the acquisition, including property due diligence, construction, structuring, and funding arrangements

The team was led by Caroline O’Flaherty, Partner and Head of Social Housing, supported by Iwan Jenkins, Partner in Construction, Alex Madden, Partner in Planning, Marie Philippe, Senior Associate and Rhiannon Davis commercial property solicitor.

Speaking on the acquisition, Caroline said:

“We continue to work alongside Hedyn and were pleased to support them on this latest strategic acquisition. Securing a new headquarters is a significant milestone. It is an innovative building incorporating shipping containers to create a funky workspace. The refurbishment of the building enables Hedyn to establish its own identity within a flagship property”

Paula Kennedy, Chief Executive of Hedyn, said:

“At Hedyn, we know how important home is in creating a sense of belonging and safety. We want the same thing for our colleagues which is why I’m so pleased to announce Hedyn’s new home.

“As a larger organisation now, it’s important for us to balance our commitment to being part of the communities we serve, with ensuring our offices are fit for purpose for our workforce.

“The move to the former Royal Mail building will help more of our colleagues work side by side meaning a more seamless service for our residents.

“I am really pleased that we have been able to continue our partnership with Hugh James throughout this acquisition, which represents one of the most significant office developments in the past five years in Wales.”

Preparatory work on the building is expected to begin shortly, with staff members due to relocate by summer 2028. We are pleased to continue to support and work alongside Hedyn as they continue to progress through this next phase of development.
