Witness appeal after former British Rail worker died from asbestos-related cancer

The family of a man who died from mesothelioma – a cancer caused by asbestos exposure – is appealing for information from individuals who worked for British Rail at Parkeston Quay in Harwich, Essex, between 1973 and 1987.

Our specialist asbestos team have been instructed by the widow of Mr Roger Read, who sadly passed away from mesothelioma in November 2022, to pursue a civil compensation claim.

Mr Read’s diagnosis and subsequent death has been an extremely difficult time for his wife and family.

We are now appealing for witnesses who worked for British Rail at Parkeston Quay in Harwich during that time. Mr Read undertook general maintenance including crane maintenance which exposed him to asbestos.

He also worked with the electrician team for a time as well as in the buildings on the quayside, including the new office at Harwich Docks. In particular, we would be very grateful to hear from others who worked in a similar role for British Rail at this time.

Jemima Ware, Associate in our Asbestos team, said:

“We are hoping to help Mr Read’s widow by locating other people who worked at Parkeston Quay for British Rail. If you worked with Mr Read at any point during his career or have any information relating to asbestos exposure at Parkeston Quay in the 1970s and 1980s, Mr Read’s family would greatly appreciate your assistance.”

Anyone with information about working conditions, asbestos exposure, or who may recall working with Mr Read is urged to get in touch. Their recollections could play a crucial role in the ongoing case to establish the circumstances of asbestos exposure and hold accountable those responsible.
