We are celebrating 65 years this month, marking our transformation from a high street practice in South Wales to a leading full-service UK firm with over 700 employees across Cardiff, London, Manchester, and the South Coast.
Founded in 1960 in Queen’s Chambers near Queen’s Arcade in Cardiff, we began by supporting communities across South Wales. A pivotal move to Hodge House, St Mary’s Street, established the central presence in the Welsh capital, later followed by the 2018 relocation to Two Central Square, Cardiff’s premier business district, fuelling national expansion.
Since then, we have doubled our London footprint, expanded our nationally recognised claimant practice in Manchester, and grown our South Coast presence. With a strong track record across individual and business client law, we have become a trusted partner to both private and public sector clients.
Over time, we have played a leading role in some of the UK’s most significant litigation – in the 1990s and 2000s, representing tens of thousands of ex-miners in one of the largest personal injury claims in British legal history; and, more recently, in 2024, securing a landmark matrix agreement with the Ministry of Defence to ensure compensation for service personnel suffering hearing loss. These cases reflect the our enduring commitment to access to justice. Our Individual services division, led by Stephen Webber, continues to lead in areas such as serious injury, clinical negligence, environmental claims, and military cases.
Meanwhile, our Business division reflects a strong commercial and sector-focused approach built on long-term trust and multidisciplinary specialism. From decades-long advisory roles with Barratt Homes and the Welsh Government to acting as principal legal advisor to the Welsh Rugby Union since 1993, including during the construction of the then Millennium Stadium, we have delivered strategic legal solutions across key industries. Our sports law credentials also include advising the British Board of Boxing Control and British Gymnastics. Under the leadership of Ioan Prydderch, the division works with major financial institutions such as Lloyds Banking Group and Metro Bank, reinforcing its expertise in banking, insurance, construction, and corporate law.
Reflecting on the milestone, Alun Jones, Managing Partner, said:
“Marking 65 years is a proud milestone that speaks to the strength of our people, the trust we’ve built with clients, and our ongoing ambition.
“From our origins as a general practice in South Wales to leading landmark group litigations and building a formidable corporate division advising national institutions across sectors, our progress has always been underpinned by a strong sense of people and purpose.
“We’re extremely proud of our heritage and excited for the future. The legal landscape has evolved dramatically, and while we can’t predict what the next 65 years will bring, one thing is certain – Hugh James will continue to thrive.”
To mark the occasion, we have launched a special heritage series of “HJ Talks” videos featuring reflections from long-serving colleagues.
We are also launching a new community initiative, offering 65 additional paid volunteering days to staff in support of causes close to their hearts, expanding on the two CSR days already given annually.
