Hugh James wins prestigious award for work with the Armed Forces

Hugh James, has become the first law firm in Wales to win a Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Award for its work supporting the Armed Forces.

Today (17 September 2020), it received the silver award from the MoD’s Regional Command – the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association for Wales.

The awards are given to organisations that pledge, demonstrate or advocate support to Defence and the Armed Forces’ community and align their values with the Armed Forces Covenant.

Hugh James signed the Armed Forces Covenant in March 2020, pledging to support the Armed Forces community as an employer and legal services provider and to endeavour to uphold the key principles of the Covenant in its business dealings.

The Armed Forces Covenant promises to acknowledge and understand that those who serve, or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy and society they serve with their lives.

Hugh James has been providing specialist legal advice and support to active service personnel, veterans and their families for many years. The firm also works in partnership with military specialists and charities throughout the year and engages in an ongoing series of educational, fundraising and sponsorship activities.

Partner at Hugh James, and Head of the Military department, Simon Ellis, said today:

“We’re honoured to receive this prestigious award, which is testament to the firm’s commitment to supporting the military community in Wales and beyond. We look forward to continuing to do our level best to help those service personnel, veterans and their families with legal and financial support and to be their trusted advisors – who understand their needs and circumstances.”

Johnny Mercer, Minister for Defence People and Veterans said:

“The breadth and diversity of the winners this year shows how business support for the Armed Forces continues to grow no matter the sector, company size or location. I am grateful for the positive attitude and flexible policies these organisations have adapted towards the defence community, which is testament to the fantastic contribution our serving personnel, veterans and their families can make to any organisation. I am delighted that so many companies are supporting our people and that, through this scheme, we can give them the public recognition they deserve.”
