The wife of Mr John Evans, who worked at Ebbw Vale Steelworks, is appealing for information from individuals who worked with him between 1961 and 1974.
Our specialist asbestos solicitors have been instructed by his wife, Mrs Jean Evans, to pursue a civil compensation claim following her diagnosis with the asbestos-related disease, mesothelioma, in December 2025.

Due to Mr Evans’ dementia, he is unable to provide information about the conditions he worked in or how he may have come into contact with asbestos. Mrs Evans is therefore appealing for help from Mr Evans’ former colleagues, or from anyone who worked at Ebbw Vale Steelworks or Hoover during the relevant periods, who may be able to provide information about the presence or use of asbestos at either site.
Mr Evans worked as a labourer, scrap boy and stoker at Ebbw Vale Steelworks and later worked at Hoover in Merthyr Tydfil between 1974 and 1991/92 in the stores in MP8 and MP5 and as a forklift driver.
It is believed that Mr Evans may have unknowingly brought asbestos dust home on his work clothing, which Mrs Evans then laundered.
Mr and Mrs Evans’ daughter, Lynsey Evans, said:
“As a family, it has been devastating to see Mum diagnosed with mesothelioma and to learn that it may have been caused by asbestos dust Dad unknowingly brought home on his work clothes. We would be incredibly grateful to anyone who feels they may be able to help to come forward with even the smallest piece of information.”
Ceri Clark, Senior Associate in our asbestos team, said:
“Mr Evans is sadly unable to assist with detailed evidence about his working conditions due to his dementia. It would therefore be extremely helpful to speak with anyone who worked with him, or anyone who has information about asbestos exposure at Ebbw Vale Steelworks or Hoover. Even if they did not work directly with Mr Evans, their evidence could be very important. Mrs Evans would be very grateful to anyone who is able to assist.”
