Action Mesothelioma Day | Working with Bristol and Beyond Asbestos Family Support (BBAFS)

This blog was written by Emma James, associate in our Asbestos Litigation team.

To mark Action Mesothelioma Day events will take place across the nation to raise awareness of mesothelioma and honour those affected by this asbestos related disease. Bristol and Beyond Asbestos Family Support (BBAFS) Group is preparing to meet on Bristol Harbourside in support of this annual event. BBAFS is a dedicated support group based in Bristol and provides invaluable resources and support to families facing the devastating impact of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.

Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer primarily caused by asbestos exposure and has consequences that extend beyond patients to their families and communities. BBAFS was established to support sufferers and their families to ensure they are not alone in their fight against this disease. The organisation aims to provide support, foster mutual help, fund raise to support research into tackling mesothelioma and promote awareness of the ongoing dangers of asbestos.

Action Mesothelioma Day is a valuable opportunity for groups like BBAFS to raise awareness of the illness and its services. This year’s theme is ‘go blue for meso’. There is a downloadable Action Mesothelioma Day 2024 supporter pack on the Mesothelioma UK website. The pack encourages supporters to use the theme in their own way throughout this week and describes various ways in which we can all show our support, alongside attending our local events.

This year BBAFS Group will be joined by Professor Nick Maskell, Consultant Physician. Professor Maskell is an expert in the field of mesothelioma and will be speaking to the support group about the disease. The day will also involve a dove release in memory of all those that have sadly lost their lives as a result of mesothelioma.

BBAFS Group supports members from Bristol, Bath, Portishead, Bridgwater, Minehead and Barry in South Wales. Hugh James has acted for many clients located within these areas following their diagnosis with mesothelioma. Unfortunately, asbestos claims against companies based in these areas continue today. Hugh James has brought claims against companies such as Drake and Scull Engineering Co Ltd, Cowlin & Son Ltd (now Balfour Beatty Construction (SW) Limited) and Pearce Construction. Regrettably, these companies represent only a fraction of those involved in asbestos litigation and so the campaign for change remains to prevent individuals being diagnosed with asbestos-related diseases into the future.

Patient support groups are integral to patient care and play a crucial role in the healthcare system. BBAFS Group provides patients and their families with support, information, and friendship. Our clients have found hope and comfort when attending events and regular days out with this inclusive group. By fostering a sense of community and offering a platform for sharing knowledge and experiences, groups such as BBAFS significantly enhance the well-being and quality of life for patients and their families.
