Armed Forces personnel – past and present – who have suffered hearing loss are being urged to register their compensation claims before 30 January 2026, following a rise in enquiries linked to the Military Hearing Loss Matrix Agreement between our firm and the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
The surge comes after four former servicemen, represented by our military team, settled their claims against the MoD under the Matrix Agreement, achieving an average payout of more than £366,000, compared with the £6,554 average award under the MoD’s Armed Forces Compensation Scheme.
The settlements were revealed at the High Court in London in early October, marking a major milestone in ongoing litigation concerning military hearing loss. Among those cases were:
Andrew Davies, 58, a former Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Engineers, who served in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan. Medically downgraded in 2011 and wearing hearing aids since age 43, he settled for £182,250.
Also, Stephen Hambridge, 46, formerly of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and Royal Engineers, diagnosed with NIHL and tinnitus in 2012 and medically discharged, who settled for £550,000.
Simon Ellis, Partner and lead lawyer for our Military Hearing Loss team, said:
“The settlements achieved so far show the significant impact that hearing loss has on service personnel and their families. It affects not only their hearing but also their quality of life, career opportunities and wellbeing.
“We’re urging anyone who believes they’ve been affected to register sooner rather than later, before the January deadline, so they don’t miss the opportunity to seek the compensation they deserve.”
We represent the majority of the 11,000+ claimants pursuing compensation through the Military Hearing Loss Matrix Agreement with the MoD, including more than 600 new registrations in the past month.
