Andrea is a partner in the employment team and has wide-ranging experience in acting for various commercial, public and third sector clients over the last 20 years which has included litigation, advisory and employment work, particularly within the health sector.
Andrea also acted for many private individuals, predominantly in relation to litigation or employment disputes.
For the past 12 years, Andrea has specialised predominantly in employment law dealing with the full spectrum of Employment Tribunal claims, including unfair dismissal, discrimination and whistleblowing. She is also experienced in providing HR support on a day to day basis, providing clients with pragmatic advice on grievance and disciplinary issues and exit strategies, often involving directors and other senior individuals. Andrea also regularly advises on re-organisation, redundancy and TUPE issues and supports the corporate team in advising on the employment law implications of company sales, mergers and acquisitions.
In the public sector her clients have included most of the Health Boards in Wales along with Community Health Councils and the Board of Community Health Councils. In the private sector she has recently acted for clients in the telecoms, gaming and manufacturing sectors such as AP Wireless II (UK) Ltd, Amelco UK Ltd and PF Concept International B.V. In the not for profit sector Andrea’s clients include a London based international charity.
For many years Andrea has worked with clients on a wide range of information law issues, both under the Data Protection Act and the Freedom of Information Act. More recently, Andrea has been heavily involved in advising and providing training on the implications of GDPR, including the drafting of compliant data protection policies, privacy notices and retention policies. She also regularly assists clients with more practical matters, such as responding to subject access requests.
Additionally, Andrea is a court appointed deputy/professional attorney for a number of clients.
Andrea has over 20 years of expertise and is highly regarded for her experience in undertaking work for the public sector, particularly in the health sector, largely in private practice but also as an in-house lawyer.
Andrea joined Hugh James in 2016. She qualified in 1996 before moving to Welsh Health Legal Services as an in-house solicitor. She moved to Bevan Ashford in 1999 where she undertook advisory, litigation and clinical negligence work for NHS clients in England and Wales. She subsequently moved to MLM Cartwright where she was a partner for 13 years and where she focused increasingly on employment work, particularly within the health sector.
Additionally Andrea is a member of the Employment Lawyers Association and is a fluent Welsh speaker.
