Joanna has a wealth of experience within the industry, having worked in the area of family law since qualifying in 1996 and more recently working exclusively in the area of child protection.

Jo's primary area of work is within the child care sector representing local authorities in care and adoption proceedings. She has worked in a variety of roles, representing different parties. She has worked in-house as a solicitor for a number of years in various local authorities, providing legal advice and representing Children Services Departments in the Family Court.

Specialising in child law and children protection, Jo previously worked as a locum, where she provided legal services to local firms and built up significant experience representing children in care proceedings. Typical instructions included representing the Children’s Guardian at Advocacy Meetings, Case Management and Issues Resolution Hearings. Jo’s broad experience in child care matters has also seen her represent parents within care proceedings.

Work history

Jo qualified in 1996, having trained at Trump & Partners (now TLT) in Bristol. She joined Watkins and Gunn Solicitors for a few years before joining Atkinsons solicitors and then Monmouthshire County Council in 2001. Jo joined Hugh James in 2003 and went on to attain the Law Society’s Children Panel in 2005. She then started working as a locum Solicitor, for a number of years, where she specialised in children law and child protection, before moving back to a law firm in 2016. Joining a local authority in 2017, Jo worked in-house for a few years advising and representing Children Services Departments in the Family Court, before returning to Hugh James in 2020, where she has joined the Children’s Social Services team.
