Case study: Mesothelioma settlement secured for former employee of Denbigh Asylum

Mr R was exposed to asbestos whilst working in the kitchens of North Wales Hospital, otherwise known as Denbigh Asylum in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

The kitchen contained boilers and pipework lagged with asbestos. Repairs were often needed and during this work the asbestos lagging was disturbed and liberated into the air where Mr R was working.

Many years later this exposure led to Mr R being diagnosed with the asbestos related cancer mesothelioma. Following this diagnosis Mr R instructed Hugh James Solicitors.

Mr R sadly passed away shortly after instructions were received and the claim was continued by his wife and executor Mrs R.

After obtaining extensive supportive witness evidence from old colleagues of Mr R and disclosing this to the Defendant together with an offer of settlement for £260,000.00, the Defendant raised formal questions of the Claimant’s medical expert regarding diagnosis.

Following the medical expert’s response the Defendant accepted the offer of £260,000.00 in April 2021.
