A team of lawyers from Hugh James’ healthcare practice, led by partner Richard Macphail, has advised new client Shaw healthcare on the award of contracts to operate 12 care homes in Powys from Powys County Council.
All 520 of the current staff at these care homes, which are currently operated by Bupa, will transfer to Shaw Healthcare on 1 June as part of the deal. Shaw has entered into a care contract and a lease of each property with Powys County Council which will see them deliver the local authority’s care services from these properties.
Hugh James has a dedicated healthcare team which has significant experience in the social care sector and has advised on numerous deals involving care providers in recent years. The team advising on this project comprised lawyers from the commercial property, commercial, employment and dispute resolution teams.
Speaking about this deal, Richard Macphail said:
“We are delighted to have had the chance to work with the team at Shaw Healthcare on such a significant transaction. They have a fantastic track record of partnering with local authorities across the UK and a reputation for delivering exceptional care services. No doubt this deal will prove a great success for both Powys and Shaw going forward.”
Speaking about Hugh James’ role in the deal Geraint Evans of Shaw Healthcare said:
“The Hugh James team worked tirelessly under tight constraints to help us reach the deal we wanted. Negotiations on transactions like this are never straightforward but we were very pleased to be able to rely on expert guidance from Richard and his team. They have a great track record within the care sector and understanding of what was needed to get a deal like this over the line.”
