Shielding to end from 1 April 2021
Public Health England has now followed the position already announced in Wales, that shielding is to come to an end from 1 April 2021. This is to reflect falling rates in recorded cases of Covid-19 and a decline in hospital admissions.
There is new guidance issued by Public Health England to those categorised as extremely clinically vulnerable. From 1 April 2021, this group are no longer advised to shield (and will no longer be eligible for SSP or similar benefits as a result of being advised to shield).
The guidance goes on to state that “Everyone is advised to continue to work from home where possible, but if you cannot work from home you should now attend your workplace.”
It does of course remain the case the normal SSP rules will continue to apply in cases where employees are certified as unfit to work by a GP.
